Art Hill > April 11, 2009 Right under my nose
Continuing my series on our town, La Grange
When Stephonie asked on an earlier post if I planned to include "that big antique building" I had to email to ask which building she meant. When I moved to La Grange this building belonged to mover. It's a block and a half past the main street so I have driven by it lots of times but never paid any attention to it. Well it turns out that 11 years ago they turned this thing into an Antique Mall. They claim that Chicago magazine chose them as the #1 antique mall. They say they have 40 dealers inside. I've never been in the place and didn't know what it was. A shot of the whole building is here.

You can see there why I thought it was a moving company building (I guessed I missed the big antique sign).

Art Hill > April 10, 2009 The Fourth Corner
Continuing my series on our town (La Grange, Illinois)
This is the Northwest corner of where the Burlington Railroad tracks meet La Grange Road (the main road through town). It's not particularly picturesque so I tried to include some traffic and the distant Caribou Coffee in the shot. The building is a Walgreens. That little glass area right at the corner used to house an ATM; it's vacant and has been for rent for a long time. At the other end of the parking lot lies Caribou Coffee and a Baja Fresh. All of this was built around the same time as the Border's and Trader Joe's. The area had previously housed a tire store, gas station and a video store that went out of business, became a mattress store that went out of business.
I shot a picture of a map that the Village has up and marked the stuff I've shown you in red. You can find it here

Art Hill > April 9, 2009 La Grange Illinois Post Office
Continuing my series on our town. Thanks to all of you who have encouraged me to keep this going.
Nothing especially noteworthy here but no tour of a town would be complete without the Post Office. This is ours, right across the street from the La Grange Road train station, North of the tracks. I find it fascinating that there is a FedEx drop off box in front of the Post Office.
Art Hill > April 7, 2009 More downtown La Grange
Continuing my series on our town (La Grange, Illinois)
This is the Southeast corner of where the Burlington Railroad tracks meet La Grange Road (the main road through town). I was standing in front of the Fannie May candy store (earlier post) for this shot.
Back in the eighties the taller building housed a huge Radio Shack Computer Store - it never did very well. I think the building was vacant for a while but some years ago after extensive remodeling it opened with a Noodles and Chipotle. Next door is a framing store called the Art Stop. Next to that is Sean Patrick's the salon where we all get our hair cut. Next a Mexican restaurant, a little sandwich shop and a bike shop. This is all part of the approximately 4 block long stretch that constitutes the main business district.
Art Hill > March 28, 2009 La Grange Village Hall
Over the next few days I thought I would show you a few things around La Grange, Illinois the Chicago suburb where we have lived since 1977. This is our Village Hall.
Art Hill > March 29, 2009 Stone Avenue Station
Continuing my series on La Grange, Illinois where we have lived since 1977. This is one of two train stations in town. It was built in 1901 and is now scheduled for some major rennovation. The express train to Chicago downtown takes 10 minutes.
I probably caught the train here between 3000 and 4000 times over the years I haven't worked downtown since 2000). I took the train downtown from here last Thursday and it felt pretty good. It's 5 blocks from my house to the station so I walked to and from the station.
The high school is less than a block from the station; many commuters park in a lot right behind the high school.
The other side of the station is here

Art Hill > March 30, 2009 Sunshine Bistro
Continuing the La Grange series (3rd post). When we moved to La Grange in 1977 this was a Chinese restaurant. During the 80's the downtown area of La Grange continued to decline and many businesses, including that one, closed. We got down to only a few restaurants, no grocery store, no book store. The village and business groups tried many things to reverse the decline. In one expensive ill-fated example they banned cars on a street called Calendar Court and remodeled it into a pedestrial mall. Nothing worked. In the mid nineties things began to turn around. A few years ago some national magazine called La Grange one of the 80 hottest suburbs in the country. We now have a Border's Bookstore, Trader's Joe's, Walgreens and at least 18 thriving restaurants. The place pictured was a French restaurant for a few years then it became the Sunflower Bistro. It's a very nice place.
Here's a painting like shot from the front
