December 30 2009 Colleen Moore Doll House
We took Kyle and Lindsey to the Museum of Science and Industry; this is one of the permanent exhibits. It is all behind glass in a rather dark room so these are shot with my new flash. And these are only a few of the rooms - the house is 8 feet tall.

This elaborate miniature house was created by silent film star Colleen Moore in the 1930s, and was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry in 1949.

It has murals and paintings painted by Walt Disney himself; chandeliers adorned with real diamonds, emeralds and pearls; the tiniest bible ever to be written, dating back to 1840; and ancient statues more than 2,000 years old.

Beginning in 1928, Moore enlisted the help of many talented professionals to help her realize her vision.

Horace Jackson, an architect and set designer who worked for First National Studios, created the floor plan and layout of the castle with the basic idea that "the architecture must have no sense of reality. We must invent a structure that is everybody's conception of an enchanted castle."

Moore also enlisted the help of art director and interior designer Harold Grieve. Grieve had designed the interiors for Moore's actual mansion, so he was a natural to create the interiors of her fantasy castle.

By 1935 more than 700 individuals had lent their expertise—including surgical instrument lighting specialists, Beverly Hills jewelers and Chinese jade craftsmen. The price tag for this 8'7" x 8'2" x 7'7" foot palace, containing more than 2,000 miniatures, was nearly $500,000.

In 1935 Colleen Moore's child-like fascination with her Fairy Castle was transformed by the Great Depression into a passion for helping children. She organized a national tour of the Fairy Castle to raise money for children's charities. The tour stopped in most major cities of the United States and was often exhibited in the toy departments of prominent department stores such as Macy's in New York City, The Fair in Chicago and May Co. in Los Angeles. A brochure from The Fair in Chicago promotes it: "A museum in itself—it awaits you—starting November 15th in our Eighth Floor Toyland. You will want to see it again and again." The tour was a huge success and raised more than $650,000 between 1935 and 1939.
December 29 2009 A long winter's nap

I hadn't caught one of Jake under the Christmas tree and it won't be up very much longer. I would have liked to have his eyes open but didn't want to wake him.
It's 8 degrees (Fahrenheit) this morning. We did see the sun yesterday and even had a blue sky, for about 30 minutes. This was my other choice for today

December 28 2009 Winter Wonderland II

Nothing comes to mind for a title this morning. I shot this from our garage about 4 o'clock just before we headed out to a movie. Gives you a little sense of our street and how much snow we got. Have a great Monday.
December 27 2009 Winter Wonderland

Yesterday morning the weather forecasters said we would have light snow showers ending around noon. It snowed all day and "light" was not a word that came to mind. When I cleared the driveway around 5:30 we had about 6 inches. Some of the towns not far North of here got 13 or 15 inches. We probably got another inch or so.

Except for clearing the driveway I wasn't even outside yesterday so shot this out the back window. That's our pond near the center.

I tried to capture the falling snow but didn't have much luck so I shot a 10 second video

Update: George I don't use a shovel except to "push" the snow off the porch. For everything else I'm just walking behind a snowblower.
December 26 2009 Airborn

Kyle and Braden got this new trampoline like thing for Christmas. Kyle wanted to see if I could get a picture of him jumping into it. Braden isn't sure this is a good idea :-)
December 25, 2009 Jumping for joy

Merry Christmas to all my smugmug friends. Lindsey and Scarlett and their parents were at our house for Christmas Eve. I think the girls had a good time.
December 24 2009 Ice

Merry Christmas! Everything here is coated with ice this morning. 20 car pile up on the tollway near here last night. Rain is on the way with flood watches. I shot this out the window a few minutes ago.
December 29 2009 Oh the weather outside is frightful

The park near my daughter's house. My grandson goest to school in that bulding in the lower left. I grabbed this out the car window on the way to their house.

Ominous weather forecast for the next several days here. "Wintry mix" today, heavy rain tomorrow changing to snow on Christmas day. Airlines are advising passengers to re-book :-)
