December 12 2012 Jake

Low light cell phone camera picture
December 11 2012 What's the difference between a strawberry and a pineapple?

There was an old joke that went like this:
"What's the difference between watermelon and a jackass?"
"I don't know"
"Remind me never to send you to the store for watermelon."

Some of you may recall that I posted a picture last month of pumpkins sitting in strawberry boxes. I thought it was kind of funny. Well yesterday I'm in that same store and I see this. So, apparently they save those strawberry boxes and drage them out as displays shelves.
December 10 2012 Two trees

The one on the left is in the 900 N Michigan Shopping Center. On the right is the Macy's tree in the Walnut Room where we had Jill's birthday dinner with the family.
December 8 2012 Gingerbread

Each year I show you the gingerbread creation at the Marriott on Michigan Avenue. They really knock themselves out. I grabbed a picture of the sign which tells about it; you can see that here.

Last years is here.
2010 is here.
2009 is here.

Ceiling in Macy's State Street Store. Built in 1907, it’s the largest unbroken example of Tiffany Favrile glass in the world, containing over 1.6 million pieces. This shot is from the first floor looking up to the fifth floor dome. I went up to the fifth floor and got a closer shot which you can view here.

Think about this the next time you're in a Walmart, Target or any of today's modern stores.
December 6 2012 Macy's Christmas Windows

Going as far back as I can remember, Marshall Field's huge State Street Store in the heart of Chicago had elaborate animated Christmas displays in the windows. We took our kids there every year. Macy's has continued the tradition. We take the grandkids to see these every year now. This year the temperature was near 60; most years it's below 30.

I made a picmonkey collage for all of you who won't get a chance to see this.
December 5 2012 It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

At our house that means Jake sitting under the Christmas tree. We'd finished decorating it for maybe 5 minutes before he got curled up under there. He spends hours under the tree - just loves it.
December 4 2012 Christmas tree ornaments

We put up our tree yesterday. These are a few of our favorite ornaments. We've had a tradition for maybe 30 years of buying an ornament at the big Marshall Field's (now Macy's) store downtown. Quite a few of them are here.

It seemed weird putting up the tree when the temperature outside was 71 degrees. Only the third time in history that the temperature in Chicago has hit 70 in December. The last time was 1970, the year we were married.
December 3 2012 Visiting Santa

Part of our downtown getaway for Jill's birthday included a visit to Santa at 900 N Michigan
