Art Hill > February 9 2010 We escaped a big snow storm

Posting early as it is now Tuesday in Chicago. Weather reports for Chicago predict as much as 15 inches of snow in a storm that could last 40 hours. We just got out in the nick of time. We will have rain here all day tomorrow but we'll take it considering.

Didn't really have time to take many pictures today but wanted to get one posted that should make it easy to figure out where we are.
Art Hill > February 8 2010 Mother and Daughter

One of the biggest joys in my life is observing my daughters as they go about being mothers.
I will be "late" posting for a while as we are leaving town this morning and our destination is a couple of time zones away. Hint, there will be no snow pictures. Tune in tomorrow.
Art Hill > February 7 2010 Jake

Jake is Joey's brother.
Art Hill > February 6 2010 Joey
Art Hill > February 5 2010 If You Give a Cat a Cupcake

We watched the girls yesterday and Jill grabbed a shot of me reading a book to them. Cute children's book.
Art Hill > January 4 2010 Our street

Thanks for the great response to yesterday's black and white snow picture. I was encouraged to post another black and white. This is looking South on our street. I guess I like two things about the bw version: 1. in a color version the gray/white sky doesn't always work. 2. The cars in the color version distract from the main subject but here they seem to fit in better.
Art Hill > February 3 2010 Winter Continues
We got a couple of inches on snow yesterday. I shot this out our back window.
I don't do much black and white but I shot this in black and white and ended up liking it better than the color version.

Art Hill > February 1 2010 Canon Picture Styles

The last few models of Canon DSLR's have provided something they call picture styles. The camera I have comes with built-in styles for Standard, Portrait, Landscape,Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome. If you choose one of these styles when you are shooting, the picture you see is rendered in that style. Later you can open the RAW file and apply a different style if you wish. I recenly learned that Canon released some additional styles: Studio Portrait, Snapshot Portrait, Nostalgia, Clear, Emerald, Twilight and Autumn Hues. These styles can be applied to RAW files you already have or they can be downloaded and installed into your camera. You can read more about them here
http://web.canon.jp/imaging/picturestyle/

I thought the Clear style was interesting:
"Telephoto shooting in cloudy and hazy conditions tends to result in flat expression. The “Clear” Picture Style file emphasizes the contrast, and expresses the subject clearly and a three-dimensional effect. It is also effective when shooting a subject behind a glass."

So I downloaded the Clear Style and applied to the pictures above. The top one was shot through the windshield of the aircraft carrier USS Midway. The bottom one of Coronado Bridge near San Diego was shot from our plane as we approached the runway. I'm sure you could achieve something similar on your own by fooling around with your image editor. But I liked the effect on these two pictures and have been experimenting around with the different styles. I've put a few more examples here

If you shoot Canon RAW and have questions feel free to email me. I can tell you what I know.
