Art Hill > April 19, 2009 Standard Station
Continuing my series on Route 66. This is called the Standard Sinclair Gas Station in Odell, Illinois. Built in 1932, it operated until 1975. It has been impressively restored. I wasn't sure how best to give you the sense of this place so I decided to put four images together. Note the old gas pump. The amount you wanted to purchase was pumped into the glass chamber and then gravity put it through the hose into your car. We were told that the road in front of this station had bumper to bumper traffic in the summer. So congested that the town built a tunnel under the road to get people to the large church on the West side of the road.

Today is my Dad's birthday. He's been gone a long time but even after all these years I miss being able to share things like this with him. I'm dedicating today's image to my Dad in remembrance of all those times he drove us down Route 66. Who knows, maybe we got gas here 50 years ago.
Art Hill > April 18, 2009 Ambler-Becker Texaco Gas Station
It was such a nice day here that we decided we needed to take a drive somewhere. we decided to explore part of Historic Route 66. Route 66 began in Chicago near Lou Mitchell's restaurant and ran to Los Angeles. It was established in 1926 and "decommissioned" in 1985. The Interstate Highway System had pretty much taken all the traffic off of Route 66 by the late 70's. My family traveled this road to California many times during the 50's and 60's. Thankfully there have been significant efforts to preserve parts of this historic piece of Americana.
We saw some pretty interesting places.

This historic 1933 filling station is identified as the longest operating gas station along Route 66. It dispensed fuel for 66 continuous years until 1999. Ambler's was the subject of major restoration work from 2005-2007, and reopened as a Route 66 visitor center in May, 2007. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
I started a series on Route 66, known as the Mother Road, with yesterday's post.

We saw some pretty interesting places. I realize that posting this picture so late in the day means it won't be viewed by many but I didn't want to miss a day. I've decided that I'm a "serial photographer" anyway so I'm going to post a series of Route 66 shots over the next several days. I know a lot of you go by the rule that you have to take a new pictures every day but that just doesn't suit my style so I hope you'll bear with me and enjoy a series from time to time.
Art Hill > April 16, 2009 Fun with Scarlett
Scarlett is two and of course learning to talk. Yesterday when I brought out my camera she caught my wife's attention, pointed to me and said "Wook, Pa's camera". She had never said camera before. After each shot (or a couple of shots) she comes over to me and says "Let's see, Pa" and I show her the picture on the LCD display. We sure have a lot of fun.

Continuing my series on La Grange, Illinois
Near the middle of the main commercial strip there is a narrow passage way back to the alley and some parking. Both walls of the passage way are lined with art work. I think they may have been part of a public art display some years ago. I doubt that very many people ever even walk through this area but I thought some of these were interesting. Way too many to show one at a time so I took some wide angle shots and combined them into this collage.
Art Hill > April 14, 2009 Even the late bird gets the worm
It was cold and windy in the park this afternoon but there were a lot of robins out there finding worms. I had the devil of a time getting close enough to one for a picture.
Art Hill > April 13, 2009 Jill and I
My wife and I in my daughter's backyard. We went to my daughter's for Easter Brunch. It was a little cool outside but we all went out any way to enjoy the sunshine.
Art Hill > April 12, 2009 Happy Easter
These are cupcakes my wife made yesterday to take to my daughter's house today for our Easter brunch. I can't wait to try one.

Continuing my series on our town, La Grange
When Stephonie asked on an earlier post if I planned to include "that big antique building" I had to email to ask which building she meant. When I moved to La Grange this building belonged to mover. It's a block and a half past the main street so I have driven by it lots of times but never paid any attention to it. Well it turns out that 11 years ago they turned this thing into an Antique Mall. They claim that Chicago magazine chose them as the #1 antique mall. They say they have 40 dealers inside. I've never been in the place and didn't know what it was. A shot of the whole building is here.

You can see there why I thought it was a moving company building (I guessed I missed the big antique sign).
