Art Hill > January 14, 2009 Still Balmy
Shot this out the kitchen window. At the rate this stuff is piling up we'll soon have to stand on a chair :-) Just cleared the driveway again this afternoon but forgot to put the camera where I could get to it with snowy shoes. The forecast high for tomorrow is 2.

Art Hill > January 13, 2009 One More Time
Until tomorrow that is :-) Yours truly in a setting where I spend a lot of time these days. It's not looking up either.
A winter weather advisory for blowing snow... is in effect until noon CST today. The blizzard warning has been cancelled
Gusty northwest winds to 30 to 35 mph this morning will create blowing and drifting snow. Visibilities may be temporarily lowered to a half mile or less this morning... especially Winds are expected to diminish this afternoon... ending the threat of blowing snow. Another clipper system will track across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana on Wednesday... Bringing another round of snow. This system... Potentially... Looks to be even stronger than the system tracking through the region this morning. Accumulating snow is expected to develop after midnight tonight and continue through the day on Wednesday. Total snow accumulation by Wednesday evening will range from 2 to 5 inches. Strong northwest winds gusting to 35 mph will combine with the fresh snow cover to produce blizzard or near blizzard conditions from late wednesday afternoon into wednesday night.
Dangerously cold wind chills of 20 below to 35 below zero are also expected by late wednesday night.
Art Hill > January 12, 2009 Not a Hot Seller
We had a foot of snow Saturday. Yesterday morning I had to clear the driveway again and head for the gas station to get more gas for the snowblower. I saw this at the gas station and it made me laugh.
Last year at this time we had only had 18 inches of snow. Through yesterday we have had 36 inches this year. Two more snowstorms are on the way. After the first one we will have had more snow already than we had all of last season. And it's only January 12th, sigh.
Art Hill > January 11, 2009 What Really Matters
I got a bunch of nifty snow shots and some more night exposures and was going to post one of those for POD. See http://arthill.smugmug.com/gallery/7035315_e7i3x#452849065_ELmER if you care to. But I got to thinking that: sure it was a big snow day and it was a lot of work to clear the driveway. The driving was pretty miserable. It was cold. But we went over to my daughters to watch my two grandsons. It is so much fun and I got this shot of my wife and Kyle. At the end of the day, when you see this, it was a great day. And life is good.
Art Hill > January 10, 2009 Winter Wonderland
Shot this from my back window about 5 minutes ago. It snowed all night, is still snowing and apparently will not stop until late this afternoon. Another 2-4 inches on top of what you see. Pretty but it's getting old.
Art Hill > January 9, 2009 Our House
Mark Johnson aka sparky675 may be right. I'm getting addicted to night photography. Why else would I be outside at 9:30 at night taking this picture? 30 second exposure. I was standing across the street for this one and as I was shooting a car drove slowly down the street so I had to start all over. The car one is here http://arthill.smugmug.com/gallery/7035315_e7i3x/1/#451705345_xNeNo-A-LB it's kind of interesting to see the trail it left.
Thanks for all the comments on my last couple of posts (you're encouraging the addiction). And I'm glad to hear that I've gotten a few people to head out to try this.
Won't be doing any night shots tonight. Big snowstorm on the way so may get back to some snow scenes.
Art Hill > January 8, 2009 Our Street
Last night about 8:30. 15 second exposure. Looking North from in front of my driveway.
Art Hill > January 7, 2009 Turning Night Into Day
This is the view of our backyard from the bedroom that I use as an "office". I'm pretty excited about how this came out because this shot is at 9:00 o'clock at night! I had never taken a really long exposure and wanted to try this. It was a little difficult to even get the camera in place up against the window since my desk is right there. I got the camera precariously set against the window, set the exposure time for 25 seconds and let the camera choose the f-stop. My camera has built-in long exposure noise reduction which I turned on. That takes another 25 seconds after the picture is exposed. I was pretty happy with the result (original is at http://arthill.smugmug.com/gallery/7035315_e7i3x/1/#450586884_jQ3H3-A-LB). Still an obvious night shot with color off a little and a lot of darkness. So I opened up the RAW file, tweaked the exposure a bit and got this. Many of you may not consider this all that interesting but I am fascinated at how such a picture can be made when it is completely dark out and only those lights in the park behind my house light things up.
