Art Hill > October 12, 2009 You might not see these around here
Just a few things that caught my eye as we travelled around London. None so interesting as to make a POD but one or two of these might bring a smile to you this morning.
Art Hill > October 11, 2009 Lindsey's Birthday Bike
Lindsey turns 5 today. Her party was yesterday and we gave her this bike. She was thrilled.
Art Hill > October 10, 2009 Swans
Later in the day after we mistook yesterday's white pelicans for swans we visited the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain next to Kensington Palace and found the real thing
Art Hill > October 8, 2009 Pelican Squadron
I just wanted to show you that buildings aren't the ONLY thing I photographed in London. On our way to Buckingham Palace we walked through St. James Park. We thought we saw some swans in the water but as we approached saw that they were white pelicans. I have shot a fair number of pelicans but only in Florida and California. I never expected to see any in London, especially not 2 blocks from our hotel. And I didn't even know that pelicans come in white. Here was my other choice, a closeup on one of them

Update: PaulFrocchi asked about a black and white version. Here it is:

Art Hill > October 8, 2009 St. Paul's Cathedral
The Great Fire of 1666 destroyed the cathedral on this site. Architect Christopher Wren oversaw the construction of the present building from 1677 until 1708. It is an impressive place with a dome rising 365 feet. The cathedral was targeted by the Germans during World War II; it was struck by bombs on 10 October 1940 and 17 April 1941. On 12 September 1940 a time-delayed bomb that had struck the cathedral was successfully defused and removed. Had this bomb detonated, it would have totally destroyed the Cathedral, as it left a 100-foot (30 m) crater when it was later remotely detonated in a secure location. On 29 December 1940, the cathedral had another close call when an incendiary bomb became lodged in the lead shell of the dome but fell outwards onto the Stone Gallery and was put out before it could ignite the dome timbers.

Photography was not allowed inside and I had a hard time getting a good shot because the cathedral is in such a crowded area. So I resorted to a collage to give you as good a view as I can.
Art Hill > October 7, 2009 Westminster Abbey
We attended church service at Westminster Abbey on Sunday. They did not allow pictures inside but you can see where we sat in the picture on this page.

We were in the last row on the right in an area known as the Quire.

Westminster Abbey is steeped in more than a thousand years of history. Benedictine monks first came to this site in the middle of the tenth century, establishing a tradition of daily worship which continues to this day.

The Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of seventeen monarchs.

The present church, begun by Henry III in 1245, is one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country, with the medieval shrine of an Anglo-Saxon saint still at its heart.

Famous people buried there other than monarchs include
Winston Churchill
Chaucer
Oliver Cromwell
Charles Darwin
Charles Dickens

We're back home now.
Art Hill > October 6, 2009 Windsor Castle
Windsor is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and the Official Residence of Her Majesty The Queen. Its rich history spans almost 1000 years. The Castle covers an area of about 5 hectares (13 acres) and contains magnificent State Apartments furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection, St George's Chapel (one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England and the burial place of 10 monarchs), and Queen Mary's Dolls House, a masterpiece in miniature.

This is the Round Tower. William the Conqueror built the first tower here of wood in 1070. Henry II rebuilt the tower in stone in 1170.

We leave soon for Chicago; it's been a wonderful vacation.
Art Hill > October 5, 2009 Traitors' Gate, Tower of London
After we attended Sunday service at Westminster Cathedral we took a boat ride on the Thames from Westminster Pier to Tower Pier. I shot this from the boat

Art Hill > October 4, 2009 War Cabinet Room
This is where Winston Churchill and his Cabinet met underground to run World War II. It has been left just the way it was in 1945 when they stopped using it. Fascinating place with many areas restored to the way they were in the 40's and a new Churchill Museum
