Art Hill > November 15, 2009 As Fall becomes Winter
The outdoor dining area at Millennium Park in Chicago has been transformed into a skating rink once again.
Lori was put in the hospital yesterday with pneumonia which was the result of swine flu. So no comments from me yesterday or today. She's doing okay but it scares you when they start with the CT Scans and MRI's. I guess parents always worry.

Art Hill > October 23, 2009 Bridge Opening - Chicago River
In yesterday's post the Wabash bridge is raised. After it closed I ran over there and took this shot of the State Street bridge after the sailboats had passed. You can see that only the right half of the Dearborn Street bridge is raised; apparently they were having some mechanical difficulties.
If you didn't see yesterday's post the basic idea is this:
In the Spring these bridges are raised twice a week for a few weeks to allow owners to sail their boats out to Lake Michigan. In the Fall the bridges are raised twice a week so that owners can take their boats OUT of Lake Michigan to wherever they store them for the winter. Only boats that can fit under the closed bridges can routinely cruise on the river.
Art Hill > October 22, 2009 Raised bridge on the Chicago River
I was so excited yesterday to see this. They only open the bridges at 10:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays, only for a few weeks in the Spring and the Fall. Ever since I quit working downtown (in 2000) I just don't get a chance to see this. I think I got a few shots in 2005. We just happened to be downtown yesterday and were walking along the river when my wife said "Look, the bridge is raising". This shot is of the Wabash Avenue bridge; I'm facing West.

Update: To answer the question: The sailboats can't get back. The bridge raising is just in the Spring to let the boats into Lake Michigan and in the Fall to let them back out. A sailboat owner only makes the trip twice in a year. The rest of the time they sail in the lake. Only boats that fit under the lowered bridges actually cruise the river.

The Halloween Village won't be set up for another week but they have the fountain dyed orange.
Art Hill > August 1, 2009 Second tallest building in the United States
Trump Tower is second only to nearby Sears Tower (now officially called Willis Tower). It passed the nearby John Hancock to become the building with the highest residence in the world. I shot this from the back of a water taxi so I'm in the middle of the river. I applied some perspective correction so the buildings wouldn't look like they were all leaning in.

In this shot you can see the short Sun Times building which was on the site before

This is the ship we cruised on when I shot yesterday's fireworks shot.
Art Hill > July 28, 2009 Fireworks over the city
I find fireworks to be a challenging subject to begin with. Shooting them from a moving sailboat moves the difficulty up another notch. I brought a monopod and fired away. Lots of shots were no good just because of boat movement but I thought this one came out pretty good. Lots of luck involved. The fireworks display was fantastic - we heard it is even better than the 4th of July and we would agree. Shot from the Tall Ship Windy.
Art Hill > July 27, 2009 Chicago Skyline.
I took this yesterday afternoon from near the Adler Planetarium just before Jill and I headed home from our anniversary getaway. I think I like it as well as any panorama of Chicago that I have done. It is a 5 images stitch covering the whole glorius skyline from the Shedd Aquarium on the left to Navy Pier on the right.

Late last night I posted a picture of us in front of the skyline along with a similar picture from 1998 (my first digital camera)
