Water lily in our pond. Normally shooting water lilies is a pretty safe activity. The mosquitoes are so bad here after all the rain that it makes for a real adventure doing anything outdoors. And swatting mosquitoes is so bad for handheld photography :-)
Hope you're all having a great weekend.

 • August 13 2010 It's hot outside

We're under a heat advisory - that's the reason to sweat! Our 6 year old grandson Kyle is hooked on the sports page. I got this snap of him reading it and thought the headline was pretty appropriate for our weather. He came to our house yesterday and wanted to play baseball outside. It was 90 with very high humidity but I didn't want to tell him I couldn't take it so we played outside :-) Fortunately, after about an hour he decided it was time to go inside.
 • August 12 2010 Life and Death

I was going to post the regular version of this
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/August-2010/13171782_LNErC#967312631_JMMAM-A-LB
Then I decided to try selective coloring.
I don't think I like this as well as the original but decided to post it anyway since it was a lot of work to create it. :-)
 • August 11 2010 Water Lily

In our pond, not cropped. Yesterday I didn't really have anything I wanted to post. Today I've got nine. :-) Life is like that.
Here is the full flower
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/August-2010/13171782_LNErC#966174882_rpcW4-A-LB
Have a great day.
 • August 10 2010 Dining together

Our cats Jake and Joey. I shot a bunch of water lilies yesterday and didn't like any of them. There are days like that.

My most popular (by far) pictures since I joined the Dailies years ago is a picture of Jake and Joey from the back
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/Daily-Photos-2008/7739978_LV5y7#370382733_n6buL-A-LB

Joey and Jake.
Thanks so much for the great response to my water lily post yesterday. It made it to #13 on my most popular list and, at least when I went to bed, was #1 on the POD.

Thanks for all the great comments on yesterdays Naper Settlement post.
You can't say I haven't provided a variety of subjects in my last 3 weeks of posts :-) This time last year I was doing a lot of flowers; I'm trying to post lots of other stuff.
 • August 6 2010 Old Meets New

No I don't mean I'm old and Kyle is new. :-) We went to the Naper Settlement where they have recreated life in Naperville in the 1800's. You know the type of place - blacksmith, old houses etc. As you walk in there is a sign directing you to have someone in your party grab the leash here, have your picture taken with this sign and upload your picture to Flickr or Facebook. So, okay, it doesn't say smugmug but I thought it was fascinating that photo sharing has "arrived". Anybody else ever seen a set and sign with instructions for sharing your experience on the web?

Update: I guess the way I wrote that was confusing. They don't actually DO anything about taking your pictures or uploading. They just have a sign with instructions and suggest that you share on Facebook or Flickr. My wife took the picture and I uploaded it.
 • August 5 2010 Buckingham Fountain

The Fountain opened on May 26, 1927.
Edward H. Bennett designed the Fountain to represent Lake Michigan with four sea horses, built by Marcel Loyau, to symbolize the four states that touch the lake: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Bennett attributed the design specifically to the influence of the Latona Basin in Louis XIV's gardens at Versailles.
Kate Buckingham dedicated the structure to the people of Chicago in 1927 in memory of her late brother, Clarence. The Fountain's water capacity is 1.5 million gallons. Depending on wind conditions, major displays use approximately 14,100 gallons of water per minute conveyed through 134 jets.
The bottom pool of the fountain is 280 feet in diameter, the lower basin is 103 feet, the middle basin is 60 feet and the upper basin is 24 feet. The lip of the upper basin is 25 feet above the water in the lower basin.

The red brick building to the left is the Hilton, site of the infamous 1968 Democratic Convention. On the right is the Congress Hotel - my youngest daughter's wedding reception was held there in the Gold Room. IN 1907 the Gold Room was considered the most magnificent room of its kind in America.
 • August 4 2010 Get your ark building kits

A flooded parking lot isn't the most fascinating subject but it shows that we've had too much rain lately. There was another "lake" behind me as I took this shot from the car. For what was behind me take a look here
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/August-2010/13171782_LNErC#958189077_ddRRD

Update 8:20 AM. More heavy rain here all morning. Flooding in the the backyard is more extensive than yesterday
Took a shot out the window here
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/August-2010/13171782_LNErC#958251993_UbpTL-A-LB

Relief promised for tomorrow.
 • August 3 2010 More to come

Water lilies in our pond. Thanks so much for all the great comments on my lighthouse photo from yesterday.
We've had two "100 year rains" here in the last month. It looks like we're on our way to a third. Back yard is flooded again. This will be a back breaker to nearby communities who haven't even finished cleaning up after the last flood.
 • August 2 2010 Kenosha Wisconsin Lighthouse

Built in 1906. Owned by the Coast Guard it was deemed "excess" in 2008 and offered at no cost to eligible entities. Apparently there were no takers.
 • August 1 2010 Back together again

Joey and Jake our 13 year old brothers. After Jake had radiation treatment we were supposed to keep them from snuggling for two weeks. They just never did this. Then, after 2 weeks they got together. Surely coincidence but it almost seemed as if they knew.
 • July 31 2010 Our pond

Yesterday we had quite a few water lilies in bloom and the clouds gave me nice morning light.

 • July 29 2010 Trump Pond

After the wonderful response to yesterday's post of the flower from the Trump Tower pond I wanted to show you the pond itself and a couple of the other flowers I found. It seemed my choices were a collage or posting these images over the next 4 days or so. Neither struck me so I decided to experiment with a short video. It's only about 35 seconds so don't be afraid to click play.
This is an experiment of sorts; I promise not to abuse this technique. I know this is a photo site and I'm not a video guy anyway.
I'll be anxious to find out if people like this or hate it.
 • July 28 2010 Beauty in the Urban Jungle

Trump Tower is right across the river from yesterdays urban disaster shot. We were surprised to discover a large pond in front of the hotel with wonderful water plants and flowers.
 • July 27 2010 Traffic was a mess

This was right around the corner from our hotel. This is the intersection of Wacker Drive and Wabash along the Chicago River.
Movie makers are filming Transformers 3 and had taken over several blocks for shooting.
They were pretty adamant about keeping everyone moving so you couldn't stop to take pictures. I managed to get a few here
• July 26 2010 Celebrating 40 Years

Our kids took us to dinner at Roy's, a Hawaiian fusion restaurant. It was a great evening and no better way to celebrate than with the product of our marriage.

Thanks for the comments on my late day post yesterday.
 • July 25 2010 40 Years!

We're back from our Chicago downtown "getaway" to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We had a bit of a time getting through flooded streets to get there but we made it and had a great time. This picture is similar to the one I posted last year
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/Daily-Photos-2009/10818177_dNL7K#602750095_ZW4iH-A-LB
showing us in front of the Chicago skyline.

There was so much rain that the Chicago River rose over the River Walk sidewalks and the tour boats were cancelled because they couldn't fit under the bridges. Amazing - about 7 inches of rain in one night.

But nothing dampened our celebration. We stayed in a great hotel, the Wit, right in the heart of the loop at State and Lake. The movie Transformers 3 was being filmed right around the corner.

The kids came down and took us to dinner at Roy's. It was fantastic. Today, no rain, lower termperature and low humidity - the perfect day to walk around one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
