September 7 2010 Chicago is My Kind of Town

In this night skyline shot you can see the Chicago River in the center, the famous S-Curve of Lake Shore Drive near the bottom and Monroe Harbor in the distance to the left. I shot this looking South East from th 31st floor of Lake Point Tower.
Thank you so much for making my Raining Fire picture #1 yesterday. I was fascinated by the observation that it reminded some people of a weeping willow tree.
We went to the Wine and Harvest Festival in Cedarburg Wisconsin. Big festival, lots going on. We stopped to listen to a live band towards the end of the day. Everybody was having a lot of fun. A woman from one of the booths right next to the band started going through the crowd squirting whipped cream into people's mouths. It was pretty funny.
I'm uploading this from our bed and breakfast in Cedarburg. We're heading out later this morning so I won't be able to comment much the next few days. Hopefully I'll be able to upload.

I thought I would have soccer pictures today but Lindsey was sick. I went to Kyle's soccer game but before the game started they sounded lighting warnings so everyone had to leave.
I didn't have anything from yesterday for my POD so I shot this two minutes ago on the deck. This represents the shortest time between shooting and posting that I have ever achieved. :-) Have a great Sunday.
 • September 18 2010 Scarlett

Once a month I babysit for the two granddaughters or the two grandsons. Last night it was Scarlett (3) and Lindsey. It's the most fun I have all month.
 • September 17 2010 I feel like I have been trapped in one of these

Posting later than ususual this morning but at least I can. Shot this in a tree in front of our house.

Yesterday afternoon I got infected with one of those awful fake virus things. I kept getting popups waning me that my computer was infected and suggesting I buy Antivirus JS for $69. This was a particularly bad one that prevented most things from running on my computer. I couldn’t even bring up TaskManager to kill it. Could not run McAfee virus scan or much of anything else. I rebooted in Safe Mode and ran the virus scanner which took all night (0ver 1 million files). This morning I rebooted with my fingers crossed and – nada – the infection was still there.

A friend had sent me links to a couple of programs that might remove the infection but I tried those and the virus prevented them from running. My last hope was to take advantage of a virus removal service that McAfee offers remotely. But.. I had to get to there web site to order it. Internet Explorer as compromised by the virus so it would only go to the fake antivirus page. Google Chrome would not even run. In desperation I clicked on Firefox and voila I got to the McAfee site. I had planned to purchase the remote virus removal service via chat but couldn’t find the page that gave that choice so I just clicked on Purchase. That gave me a phone number to call. I hooked up with a man named Thomas Abraham, probably in India. The first few things he asked me to try did not work. Although we got to the remote access software that he needed to use, my virus would not let that program run. He had me reboot in Safe Mode with networking and we got him connected. He took over my computer and, for the next 45 minutes or so, went through dozens and dozens of steps to find and eliminate my infection. It was fascinating to watch although he was working very fast. We had terminated our phone conversation; he said we could use chat. The moment of truth came when he said he was going to reboot the machine in normal mode and I should watch for error messages. Thankfully I did not see any and waited, holding my breath, to see if the virus would reappear. It did not! Hoooooray! He performed another bunch of tasks and then informed me in the chat window that everything was fixed. I felt like jumping up and clicking my heels. I am still amazed that they can do that.
We went to a little nature center with the girls yesterday. Dim light, ISO 3200. Through aquarium glass so flash wasn't an option. I tweaked the RAW file and applied noise reduction with Canon's Digital Phot Professional (that comes with the camera)

Dinner last night. I know I've posted similar shots but at least this one is on a different plate. It tasted as good as it looks.

Jill and I were shopping in Geneva with Lori, Lindsey and Scarlett at a huge store that takes forever to go through. After a while I asked Lindsey and Scarlett if they would rather go outside and play. Scarlett declined but Lindsey and I headed out. We found a nice shady spot in front of a Thomas the Train store. Lindsey discovered a bucket of chalk and said she wanted to draw on the sidewalk. As she finished each piece she asked me to take a picture of it. I promised I would send her the pictures. The lady who owned the store came out and told Lindsey she was thrilled with the sidewalk decorations. She asked me if she could give Lindsey a piece of chocolate as a reward. Lindsey loves to draw and at age 5 now has her first "paid" work. :-)
 • September 13 2010 Reading the sports section

My six year old grandson Kyle reading his own newspaper. When I got over to his house he told me he wanted me to help him make a newspaper. He already had all the details in his head - 4 pages, what kind of pictures, headlines and copy. We did pictures of him playing baseball, basketball and football. Then we got on the computer and he showed me which pictures he wanted, where he wanted them on each page, how big to make them, etc. Then he dictated the captions for each picture using names of real sports teams and players. He was quite precise about fonts and font sizes. On the back page we created box scores and summaries. He was thrilled with the result. And, I couldn't have had more fun.
 • September 12 2010 Lindsey's First Soccer Game

Lindsey who will be 6 next month played in her first game. She gave a good account of herself and seemed to have a lot of fun. Her grandmother and I thought she was the cutest player on the field too.
 • September 11 2010 Remebering 911

Jill and I visited Ground Zero a year after 911. I submitted the flag photo to a big 911 photo project and it was included in a book and traveling photo exhibit. For today I've added a couple of the more prominent pieces of tribute written on the plywood supporting the flag.
One of my clearest memories of the awful day was calling my two kids and insisting that they get out of downtown Chicago. One worked near Sears Tower and one worked near Lake Point Tower, the world's tallest apartment building. We were very afraid that Chicago could be attacked next.
 • September 10 2010 Time to get up?
Joey and Jake are curled up in my office in the morning like you may have seen in yesterday's post. This is what happens when my wife gets up and peeks in to see how they are doing.

I am humbled and honored by the attention you all have showed on my last two daily posts. Thank you sooo much. I couldn't even have imagined having back to back #1 pictures in this awesome community. The Rain of Fire and night skyline leapt to #4 and #7 on my own Most Popular list. This in itself is amazing to me. Thank you, thank you.

 • September 6 2010 Raining Fire

For this I one I tried a 20 second exposure. As I said yesterday, for me, shooting fireworks involves lots of guess work. I like the way this one came out. I shot it from the 41st floor of Lake Point Tower.
 • September 5 2010 Fireworks over Navy Pier

I shot this last night from the 41st floor of Lake Point Tower, facing East. In the lower left you can see part of Navy Pier where I took those recent skyline photos. Shooting fireworks, I think, is always problematic - it involves a lot of guesswork. Although I do see some great shots of just the fireworks I usually like ones best that include some of the surroundings.

Have a great Sunday.
 • September 4 2010 Our backyard
Tuesday we put in 5 new evergreen trees so I wanted to get a yard shot with those in it. They're on the left. We replaced a bunch of old lilac bushes; I put a before and after picture here
Have a great weekend. Fall arrived instantly yesterday, overnight temperatures fell into the 40's.
 • September 3 2010 Mmmm Mmm Good

My wife's homemade chicken salad. Delicous.
Thanks to all who commented on the issue of having a lackluster photo day. I was glad to hear that lots of people have streaks and slumps. Also thought it was good advice to go back after a day or two and take another look - maybe a few pictures you didn't like initially will look better. Great interchange I thought.
