January 22 2010 Still out of work

It was one year ago today that I got that awful phone call informing me that I was being laid off from Microsoft. A real shocker! My post the next day http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/Daily-Photos-2009/10818177_dNL7K/1/#460068810_cepaX-A-LB
is the second most popular shot I've posted to the dailies so I thought I should post something to commemorate the event.

This isn't a very good clone job but you get the idea :-)

I'm not as bitter as I was about it. I still get bile in my throat every time I hear a politician saying what he or she will do for "working" families. There are some pluses. I've gotten to see a lot of my grandkids. I find it pretty easy to get rid of phone sales people. I've had more time to spend on the dailies.

Have a great Friday.

 • February 9 2010 We escaped a big snow storm

Posting early as it is now Tuesday in Chicago. Weather reports for Chicago predict as much as 15 inches of snow in a storm that could last 40 hours. We just got out in the nick of time. We will have rain here all day tomorrow but we'll take it considering.

Didn't really have time to take many pictures today but wanted to get one posted that should make it easy to figure out where we are.
 • February 8 2010 Mother and Daughter

One of the biggest joys in my life is observing my daughters as they go about being mothers.
I will be "late" posting for a while as we are leaving town this morning and our destination is a couple of time zones away. Hint, there will be no snow pictures. Tune in tomorrow.
We watched the girls yesterday and Jill grabbed a shot of me reading a book to them. Cute children's book.
 • January 4 2010 Our street

Thanks for the great response to yesterday's black and white snow picture. I was encouraged to post another black and white. This is looking South on our street. I guess I like two things about the bw version: 1. in a color version the gray/white sky doesn't always work. 2. The cars in the color version distract from the main subject but here they seem to fit in better.
 • February 3 2010 Winter Continues
We got a couple of inches on snow yesterday. I shot this out our back window.
I don't do much black and white but I shot this in black and white and ended up liking it better than the color version.

 • February 1 2010 Canon Picture Styles

The last few models of Canon DSLR's have provided something they call picture styles. The camera I have comes with built-in styles for Standard, Portrait, Landscape,Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome. If you choose one of these styles when you are shooting, the picture you see is rendered in that style. Later you can open the RAW file and apply a different style if you wish. I recenly learned that Canon released some additional styles: Studio Portrait, Snapshot Portrait, Nostalgia, Clear, Emerald, Twilight and Autumn Hues. These styles can be applied to RAW files you already have or they can be downloaded and installed into your camera. You can read more about them here
http://web.canon.jp/imaging/picturestyle/

I thought the Clear style was interesting:
"Telephoto shooting in cloudy and hazy conditions tends to result in flat expression. The “Clear” Picture Style file emphasizes the contrast, and expresses the subject clearly and a three-dimensional effect. It is also effective when shooting a subject behind a glass."

So I downloaded the Clear Style and applied to the pictures above. The top one was shot through the windshield of the aircraft carrier USS Midway. The bottom one of Coronado Bridge near San Diego was shot from our plane as we approached the runway. I'm sure you could achieve something similar on your own by fooling around with your image editor. But I liked the effect on these two pictures and have been experimenting around with the different styles. I've put a few more examples here

If you shoot Canon RAW and have questions feel free to email me. I can tell you what I know.
 • January 31 2010 Cards

We had our bridge group over last night. We brought out these two new decks that we picked up on our Route 66 day trip last Spring.

This is the second time in 10 days that a picture I have uploaded looks much differrent that what I expected for color. I tried using smugmug's auto color correction both times but it didn't help. This is odd because all the rest of the time I get what I expect. Anybody else experience this?

Update: I think I figured it out. I sometimes use Capture One to process RAW files. It has an option to embed one of three ICC profiles: Camera, AdobeRGB or sRGB. For the pictures that smugmug changed colors I had left the default Embed Camera Profile. If I change it to sRGB or AdobeRGB before uploading then the smugmug version is as I expect it to be. Also if I just upload the original jpg file it looks okay. I don't want to replace this photo as I think that resets the counters for popular today but the unaltered color one is here
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/January-2010/10859401_tWhYa#777398364_8wAhx-A-LB
 • January 30 2010 Scarlett

We all went to Chucky Cheese yesterday.
 • January 29 2010 Where I hang out

Thanks for all the great comments on the picture of Scarlett yesterday. It climbed quickly to #13 on my most popular list. Didn't have much for today so I thought I'd show you where I spend my time. We call it my office but it's just a bedroom. That window in the center is the one where I've taken so many pictures of the back yard. I so seldom have the place straightened up that I figured I'd better grab a picture. This is a three image pano done with a wide angle lens so not a very good picture. I just wanted to find a way to include as much as practical.
Brutally cold here again but no storms int the short term forecast.
 • January 28 2010 Scarlett

I'm basically a candid photographer with no experience in studio or even posing subjects. Yesterday we talked Scarlett into doing a little posing. I tried out shooting with two flashes. For a kid still over a month away from turning 3 she did a great job.
 • January 27 2010 My morning starter

Thanks for the great response to yesterday's circular slide rule. This is one of 3 or 4 mugs that I use for coffee.
 • January 26 2010 Before Calculators - No batteries required.

This is a circular slide rule that I used in college. There were no calculators - the first Texas Instruments calculator came out in 1970. Slide rules were invented in the 1600's so they had a pretty good run. :-) Circular slide rules came about as a way to enhance precision - if you "unwrapped" the circle the scale would be much longer than the typical straight slide rule. This one was copyrighted in 1940 and manufactured in Florida by the Gilbert Company.
I wonder how many you have ever seen one of these.
 • January 25 2010 Kodak VR35

Decided to continue the camera series. I don't remember much about this camera; it must have been my first attempt to pick up a point and shoot rather than haul all of the SLR stuff. Kodak sold it from 1986 to 1989. The list price was $200. I read somewhere that this was their flagship 35mm camera which they introduced after being out of the 35mm market for 17 years. KInda of boxy looking. Notice that the flash was part of the lens cover; at least this would get the flash up a little higher than the typical pop-up.
 • January 24 2010 Last one before digital

Continuing the camera series. By the mid 90's the kids were off to college and I wasn't doing much photography except for vacations and the ususal birthdays and holidays. I guess I was tired of lugging the SLR and all those heavy lenses, external flash, etc so I picked up this Olympus IS100s. It seemed okay at the time. Even though I got a digital camera in 1998 I continued to shoot film with this camera for a little while. I actually took this on our British Isles trip in 1998 because I was afraid I would fill up the digital card I had with my 1 megapixel Kodak digital camera. Cards were phenomenally expensive back then so I only had two. I should have taken the digital anyway as much of the film I shot with this camera was ruined by x-ray machines at the Glasgow airport.
So, this camera isn't perhaps as interesting as the last few I posted. This is probably the end of the series. Or, maybe not :-)
 • January 23 2010 Everything that's important to me

First, thanks for the overwhelming response to my "unemployment line" post yesterday.
I had a great day yesterday. This shot is after lunch on our way to the library. My wife, my two daughters and my four grandkids. I am truly blessed.

 • January 21 2010 Canon T70

My first 35mm camera was an Argus C3 that I bought sometime in the 60's. I can't show it here because I loaned it to my brother and he left it in a taxi cab in San Francisco. I did post a picture of one last March
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/Daily-Photos-2009/10818177_dNL7K/1/#491704833_WBCQV-A-LB
I did manage to pick up a Canon A1 in 1978 but LindaD has already posted a picture of an A1.
I probably got this Canon T70 in 1984. This was the first "computerized" camera.
From the Canon museum:
"The large LCD panel and key-touch buttons had a major impact on 35mm SLR cameras that followed. The T70 features shutter speed-priority TTL AE, TTL multi-program AE, and preset aperture AE. The dual metering system gives a choice of centerweighted averaging metering and partial metering at the center. In 1984, the camera won the Good Design Award (from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry) and the European Camera of the Year Award. "

The lens is a 28-105 macro focusing f2.8 Vivitar Series 1.
