• October 30 2010 Last one

Alas, the season is over. No more till next May or June. I hate that. Just had to do one more.

Last visit to the French Market near our house. We were freezing with the strong wind and felt sorry for the vendors.
I had nothing in mind to post today. Thought I'd see how the day goes. Spotted this cardinal on the ground outside our back window. Everytime I see him I go to get the camera and he is never still there. Today he stayed for a few seconds and I got this not so good shot in dim light through the window. A nature photog I'm not but at least I got something for today. Very cold here now. High of 48. Have a great day.
 • October 27 2010 Breaking News

Yesterday about the time I was posting my POD I heard a loud "crack" and looked out the window to see this huge branch from my neighbor's tree falling across the fence into our yard. A real mess. High winds continued all day but other than this we survived the storm.
 • October 25 2010 Fullersburg Woods

Yesterday afternoon was sunny and bright, just great for taking fall pictures. We headed over to Graue Mill/Fullersburg Woods but by the time we arrived skies had become gray and overcast. I shot a few pictures but was disappointed in the results. I shot them with White Balance set to Auto. I read a tip this morning that suggested experimenting with the white balance so I opened the RAW file and changed white balance to cloudy. I was a lot happier with the result.

They are telling us we will have the worst storm in 70 years, rivalling the one than sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald. High winds all day today and tomorrow. I hope we don't lose power. The storm just fired up big time in the last 40 minutes.
The storm is starting up just as I write this.

I put a few other shots here
• October 25 2010 End of the Season

Alas in the Midwest the farm stands all close in October. This one was open for one last Sunday.

Thanks so much for all the attention on my fall shot yesterday. For those of you who lamented the lack of brilliant color this year - you're not alone. We are having a very blah fall in general; I had to hunt pretty hard to find that picture yesterday. Just not like previous years.
 • October 24 2010 Fall

A little wide angle distortion from pointing up but I wanted to get red, yellow, green and some sky.
Have a great Sunday.
 • October 23 2010 Fall

We drove through Morton Arboretum hoping to catch some fall colors before the rains come today. It really wasn't nearly as colorful as we expected but we found a few nice places. For some reason the color here isn't as spectacular as usual, perhaps because it has been so warm.

As for the controversy the last few days:

Relax, have fun. Post some pictures. Comment on a few if you have the time. I try to post interesting pictures that I want my daily community friends to see. Often I'm guessing ahead of time that a photo won't "rank" very high but I don't care much. Sometimes I'm excited that a picture of mine does generate a lot of interest and rank pretty high. If a few people want to manipulate things to rank #1 I'm not going to let it drive me away from the community. If I left every group I belong to that has a bad actor I would belong to nothing. C'mon - don't cut off your nose to spite your face. Lately I've just figured that if my picture was #2 then, in reality, it was #1 :-) As long as there aren't huge cash prizes just pretend that the manipulated photos aren't there.
Perhaps the individual we're all talking about will reform ( I doubt it) but sooner or later there will be another offender. I'll ignore them too. I'm really disappointed that some of the people I like here have left and hate to have any more leave. I think we all learn a lot here and have some fun. That's good enough for me.
And thanks for all the attention you give to my pictures - it always makes my day.
 • October 22 2010 Got a rake?

I haven't really gotten out to capture the glorius autumn we're having but I've snapped a few. This is in the yard next door. October here has been the best anybody remembers - warm temps, no rain, sunshine everyday. That all comes to and end tomorrow with rain all day Saturday and Sunday. Much colder next week. So I guess once again I will have missed getting out to do justice to fall colors. It just seems like we've had something going every day that took priority. Ah well :-)
 • October 21 2010 Is this big enough?

We were out with my grandson Kyle looking for some colorful leaves to press. We decided this one was too big to fit in a book. :-)
The tokens on the chain around his neck each represent one mile that he has run after school on Wednesdays. He runs two miles every Wednesday. We were supposed to pick him up a little later yesterday as he planned to run 3 miles. The teacher vetoed the 3 miles plan though. (Kyle is 6).
 • October 20 2010 Joey and Jake -brothers

We got the results back from Jake's 3 month check-up after having radiation therapy for hyperthyroidism. His number at the low end of the normal range so it looks like the procedure worked.
 • October 19 2010 Lindsey

We brought her to our house for a while yesterday afternoon. She is the happiest kid we know. Just a complete delight to be with.

Thanks for the great response to yesterday's post.
 • October 18 2010 This is me.

I have posted 821 pictures to the dailies and have never posted one of myself. I've appeared in a handful of group pics but that's it. My youngest daughter got a Canon T1i from her husband for their tenth anniversary last week so she stopped by to have me give her some tips on using it. We stepped out on the deck just to shoot a couple of sample pictures so I could show her the effects of pictures styles. She snapped this one of me and I decided for some unknown reason to use it as my daily. I may do this again 821 shots from now. :-) Have a great Monday. Thanks for all your attention to my posts and support as I went through being without my camera. This is such a wonderful group.
 • October 17 2010 Robie House

Yesterday we visited the 8000 square foot Robie House not far from Obama's house in Chicago's Hyde Park.

The Robie House on the University of Chicago campus is considered one of the most important buildings in American architecture. It was created by Frank Lloyd Wright for his client Frederick C. Robie, a forward-thinking businessman. Designed in Wright's Oak Park studio in 1908 and completed in 1910, the building is both a masterpiece of the Prairie style and renowned as a forerunner of modernism in architecture.

The architectural significance of the Robie House was probably best stated in a 1957 article in House and Home magazine:

During the decades of eclecticism's triumph there were also many innovators--less heralded than the fashionable practitioners, but exerting more lasting influence. Of these innovators, none could rival Frank Lloyd Wright. By any standard his Robie house was the House of the 1900s--indeed the House of the Century.

Above all else, the Robie house is a magnificent work of art. But, in addition, the house introduced so many concepts in planning and construction that its full influence cannot be measured accurately for many years to come. Without this house, much of modern architecture as we know it today, might not exist.
 • October 16 2010 The Bean

Officially known as Cloudgate ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_gate), this sculpture is in Chicago's Millennium Park. I shot yesterday's post from inside the Bean where you can see those people standing.
 • October 15 2010 Hooray, I'm back!!!

PIcked up my camera and lens yesterday morning - all fixed. To test it out I walked over to Millennium Park and shot a few pictures of Cloudgate, also known as the Bean. For this shot I stepped inside the Bean and shot upwards. So, yes all of those pictures are me. Most of the time when I've been there it has been pretty crowded; yesterday there weren't very many people there at 9:30 in the morning. If you've seen the Bean this shot will make sense to you. If you haven't, you can see what the thing looks like in this picture.

The Chicago Botanical Garden still has a few lilies in bloom. I like the way the water and reflection turned out in this one.
 • October 13 2010 Swans

Jill and I went to Chicago Botanical Gardens with Amy and the boys yesterday. It was a glorius day with sun, blue skies and temperature in the mid-70's.

I had way too many to choose from for POD. I put a few others here
http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/October-2010/14008608_UUhtr#1046189844_5h96E
