Jul 21 2010 My wife is a great cook AND an artist

Sometimes in the summer we like to have a light supper. My daughter had picked up some veggie tuna from a New York deli so my wife suggested that we have that in a tomato. I had to run out for a bit right before dinner so she said she would throw it together while I was out. This is what she came up with. And she grows the chives right out on our deck. In four more days we will have been married for 40 years so you'd think she would be out of ideas for a meal - but you'd be wrong. :-)

White water lily in our pond.
Thanks for the great response to the purple and yellow cauliflower picture from yesterday.
The heat index was 102 yesterday. Now we're having torrential rains, backyards are flooded, more rain on the way with a high of 94.
We're going to stay in downtown Chicago to celebrate our anniversary so I won't be able to post tomorrow.

Have a great weekend.
 • July 23 2010 You learn something new every day

The only caulifower I've ever had was white. We walked through our local French market and I was surprised to see these.
 • July 22 2010 Wrigley Field

We went to a Cubs game yesterday. The hapless Cubs managed to lose the game in the 12th inning after leaving men on base in the 8th and 9th.
Win or lose it's always fun to take in a game at "The Friendly Confines". Wrigley Field was built in 1914 and is the second oldest baseball park. The Chicago Bears played here as well from 1921 until 1970.

During the 1932 World Series at Wrigley Field Babe Ruth is said to have "called his shot" by pointing to the stands before hitting a home run. My Dad was at that game as an Andy Frain usher.

Update: In response to Jacci's question, my Dad told me he saw Ruth point to the stands and then hit the home run.

 • July 20 2010 Delicate folds

I was complaining a few posts ago that we got these bushes that we thought were "regular" hibiscus and that turned out to be like this. I'm withdrawing the complaint :-) . We've decided that these produce gorgeous blooms that are fascinating to look closely into and they provide a great splash of color on our deck.
In our pond. Have a great start to your week.
 • July 18 2010 First meal on a new grill

We picked up a new grill yesterday to replace our ten year old grill. It needed parts which are no longer available. This new one uses infrared cooking and the literature claims this will give jucier meats and take less time to cook. Based on one test with these bison burgers, I'd say this is going to be fantastic. We thought these were the best burgers we've had in a long time. We grilled corn on the cob in the husks and that came out great too.

Like most of you, we're in the grip of a beastly heat wave with no end in site. Stay cool.
 • July 17 2010 Our pond

Thanks so much for the great response to my water lily series. I thought it was time to show you where I shoot them.

Jake is glad to be home and he's doing great.
 • July 16 2010 Another water lily

I can't help it :-) Of course I check the pond every day to see what we've got. Lots of days the light is a problem - too bright, mottled sunshine through the trees, overcast and flat, too dark or light is right but there are other problems. When I walked out yesterday thought I knew I would get a good shot of this one with a nice reflection. I just loved the light, filtered through high light clouds. Most of the time I either have too many choices for my daily post or I don't even have one that I'm all that fond of. As soon as I saw this one on the screen I knew I had my POD.

We're very excited; we pick up our cat Jake from the animal hospital today. It will sure be good to have him home.
 • July 15 2010 Hey, I'm wearing a fur coat and it's 93 degrees and humid, okay?

Caught this guy taking a break on our deck to beat the heat. Shot through the window without much light but I thought it was funny enough to post.
 • July 14 2010 Lily Reflected

I took a day off from water lilies yesterday but wanted to get this white one posted. The biggest challenge for me with water lilies in our pond is to get the exposure right and still try to get some of the reflection. Generally I can't shoot out there until the pond is shaded so that makes the water pretty dark.

Our cat Jake is still at the animal hospital (until Friday). They called yesterday and said he is doing great. It's pretty strange arorund here without him.
 • July 13 2010 The "other" hibiscus

I mentioned in an earlier post that we bought a couple of hibicus thinking they were the standard variety we always get. We were surprised to find that the blossoms looked like this. I still like the regular ones better http://arthill.smugmug.com/Photography/Daily-Photos/5529181_hoJ5g#927532004_Gozdr-A-LB) but these blooms ARE pretty.
 • July 12 2010 Just another water lily

Water lilies are one of my very favorite subjects so I'll probably over do it for dailies. This also is in our pond; we have three varieties in bloom at the same time.

We have to take our cat Jake to a hospital for radiation treatment of his thyroid. They have to keep him 5 days. We're pretty bummed out because we know he won't like it at all. And I haven't been able to feed him this morning. When he gets back we have to avoid close contact for 2 weeks. How do you do that with a lap cat? Anyway we have to leave soon because it's so far away and I'll be gone for much of today.

Thanks so much for the great response to yesterday's post. It went to #24 on my most popular page.
 • July 11 2010 Starting to close up for the day

Same lily as yesterday but starting to close with afternoon sunlight.
I almost posted this pano of the backyard
• July 10 2010 Take time to reflect

Water lily in our pond.
Thanks for all the nice comments on my potato picture yesterday. A couple of people asked if the purple ones tast different. They all taste the same.
 • July 9 2010 Spuds

At the French Market in Western Springs, the village next to ours. We bought some of these a few weeks ago; they were very good.
 • July 8 2010 Hibiscus on our deck

When we got back from our trip it seemed all of the hibiscus trees were sold out. We did find a couple at Home Depot but discovered when they bloomed that they were not the "regular" hibiscus but those double ones that look quite different. Luckily we found a regular hibiscus tree last weekend and put it on the deck. Here is one of the flowers.
 • July 7 2010 Soft and pink

The heat and bright sun lately have made flower shots a challenge. I found this little one in the park behind our house. I thought the subtle gradations of pink made this a nice one. Not a big bold flower - you could easily pass this by.
 • July 6 2010 Day Lily

We have three kinds of day lilies in our yard. This is my favorite. I like the delicate coloring and almost translucent quality. We're having a heat wave here but I guess not as bad as the East coast.
 • July 5 2010 Celebrating my birthday

We had the family at our house for 4th of July barbeque and to celebrate my birthday. The four grandkids surrounded me to help open cards and presents. It doesn't get any better than this.
